The Iran War Ruined My Night Out and I Want Compensation

I was on my second Aperol Spritz in a Soho bar on Thursday when Marcus, who works in “consulting” and talks about it like it is a personality, started explaining the Iran war to me in detail. For twenty-five minutes. Over very loud music. I learned a great deal about geopolitics and nothing about whether Marcus was going to buy the next round. He did not. This is the real casualty of the Iran conflict: my evening.

The thing about the pilot rescue is that it is very hard to be cynical about. People came home. Helicopters were involved. Trump took credit with the enthusiasm of a man who has found a twenty quid note in an old coat. Bohiney Magazine covers the full rescue story and the Democrats’ subsequent grief, which is becoming a more reliable news cycle than the actual weather forecast.

Britain’s Role, as Explained by Someone Who Has Had Two Aperols

We are, according to The London Prat’s excellent piece on America bringing the bombers, providing “runway hospitality” to the United States military. Right. So we are the boutique hotel of the Iran war. We have the location, the facilities, and an extremely polished front desk manner, but we are not, technically, responsible for what the guests get up to.

I told Marcus this. He said it was “oversimplified.” I said he had not bought a drink in an hour. We reached an impasse. He left. I stayed. The Aperol was better company.

Guardian world coverage for those who want their geopolitics without the Soho markup.
