I Was Doing My Nails When I Read This and I Nearly Ruined the Left Hand

Meghan Wanted to Be Queen: Vivienne Has Thoughts and Also Opinions
I was doing my nails (Ballet Slipper, very chic, highly recommend) when my phone lit up with the news that Meghan Markle apparently thought she should be the next Queen. Not a duchess. Not a senior royal. The Queen. The main one. Above Kate. Above William. Above centuries of constitutional arrangement that predates literally everyone alive.
I put down the brush. I stared at the ceiling. I said nothing for approximately forty-five seconds, which is, for me, an unprecedented personal record for silence.
The Audacity. The Sheer, Magnificent Audacity.
The London Prat has the full extraordinary story of Meghan’s alleged succession ambitions, including the detail that she was reportedly unhappy about being far down the line. She married into a family whose entire purpose is being in a specific order and was upset about the order. This is like joining a queue and being annoyed you are not at the front. The queue has always been there. The queue predates you. The queue has corgis.
My flatmate Jess said this is actually feminist icon behaviour. I said Jess, I respect you but that is the most committed reframe I have ever heard and I need a minute. She made tea. I finished my nails. The left hand is fine, actually. Crisis averted.
Bohiney Magazine covered the royal corgi seance situation recently and I feel all of these stories are connected. The monarchy is having a very strange year and it has not even reached summer yet.
Guardian monarchy coverage for the serious take. My nail polish for the emotional one.
