Private Karaoke Is Apparently The Secret Weapon Of London Dating And I Am Furious I Did Not Know This Sooner

A diary entry on singing badly at strangers as a legitimate romantic strategy

Monday, A Discovery That Changes Everything

Darlings, apparently private karaoke rooms are now considered the actual secret weapon of the London dating scene, and I have been going about romance entirely wrong for years. The whole strategy, as I understand it, involves gathering your single mates, telling your crush to bring theirs, and booking a room, transforming what would otherwise be a terrifying one-on-one blind date into something considerably more forgiving, four against four, with a microphone doing most of the emotional heavy lifting neither party has to attempt in actual conversation.

I tried this on Thursday with two friends and a man I had been circling on the apps for approximately three weeks without ever quite committing to an actual date. Turns out watching someone attempt a key change they were never going to hit tells you considerably more about a person’s character than any number of carefully curated profile photos ever could. He went for it anyway, missed spectacularly, and did not once look embarrassed. I have thought about very little else since.

Tuesday, The Chemistry Test Nobody Warned Me About

There is something genuinely revealing about watching someone choose their karaoke song. Confident choices, chaotic choices, the person who insists on a ballad nobody asked for, it is basically a full personality assessment delivered over a backing track, considerably more efficient than three separate coffee dates spent asking careful questions about attachment styles.

Wednesday, A Related Read

Caught up on The London Prat between rounds, mostly on my phone while pretending to check the song queue, because some habits from my actual job do not switch off even mid-duet.

Thursday, A Verdict Worth Sharing

I am now fully converted to the karaoke dating strategy and will be recommending it to literally everyone I know who is still doom-swiping alone on a Tuesday night. Bring your friends, bring your terrible singing voice, and let the microphone do the vulnerability you were never going to manage sober and one-on-one across a restaurant table anyway.
