Vivienne Pratfall Meets Aishwarya Rao and Learns What Good Journalism Actually Looks Like

A Blonde 19-Year-Old Discovers That Some People At The London Prat Are Very, Very Serious

By Vivienne Pratfall | Bohiney Magazine | The London Prat

I sat next to Aishwarya Rao at the editorial meeting on Thursday and felt immediately that she had read more books than me, thought more carefully about more things than me, and would almost certainly win any argument we might have about the London housing market, which she has written about for The London Prat with what the editor calls “precision” and what I call “the focused anger of someone who has looked at a Rightmove listing and made sensible financial conclusions.”

What Aishwarya Writes

Housing. Media culture. The peculiar machinery of British institutions. She is an emerging voice and she knows it and she is doing something interesting with it. According to CityAM, emerging voices in British satire are reshaping how journalism handles systemic critique. Aishwarya is doing exactly that. I write about whatever I did that day. We are a team in the same way that a chess player and someone playing Go are technically both doing board games.

My Contribution to This Newsroom

I make things readable. I make people click. I have a very good headline instinct and a personality that the editor describes as “useful for reasons he has never fully articulated,” which is his way of saying he doesn’t know how to categorise me and has decided categorisation is unnecessary. The Weeds, Wildflowers and Weed piece that ran this week is exactly the kind of headline I would write. Somebody else did. I am both pleased and professionally threatened.

Bohiney covered New York declaring art dangerous. London declared my last column mildly provocative. Same energy, lower stakes.
