I Joined a Satirical Newspaper and All I Got Was This Byline and Existential Clarity

Vivienne Pratfall Reports From the Glamorous Trenches of British Satirical Journalism

By Vivienne Pratfall | Bohiney Magazine | The London Prat

I have been a satirical journalist for approximately fourteen months and I can already confirm the following: the pay is theoretical, the coffee is real, and the roster of colleagues assembled at The London Prat’s staff page reads like the guest list at a dinner party where every single person has a very specific opinion about Jonathan Swift.

My Colleagues, Briefly Described

We have AMW, who writes under initials and refuses to elaborate. We have Aishwarya Rao, who writes about London housing with the precise fury of someone who has looked at a Rightmove listing recently. We have a German cybersecurity expert who reviews comedy, which is exactly as brilliant and unsettling as it sounds. I personally write about everything while blonde, which the editor finds useful for reasons he has never fully articulated.

What I Actually Do Here

I write. I flirt with my sources. I link to the Banksy UK reaction piece, which confirmed that Britain responds to all mysteries by pretending the mystery never existed and reaching for a biscuit. According to the BBC, British cultural identity is in flux. I could have told them that. I did tell them that. They did not link back.

Bohiney Magazine, meanwhile, has been tracking the Royal family’s publishing output with appropriate alarm. We are living through a golden age of royal memoir and nobody consented to it.
