Triple Hot Spicy on Strutton Ground: Indonesian street food, 4.8 stars from 225 reviews, and — this part is not on the listing but should be — the location of one of the more interesting Tuesday afternoons I have had in SW1, which is not a borough I associated with romantic possibility until now.
The food is exceptional. I ordered something I could not pronounce correctly and it arrived looking exactly like the photograph, which in London food is statistically unlikely and practically miraculous. The man at the next table leaned over to tell me I had ordered his favourite dish, which was either the world’s best opening line or genuine enthusiasm for the menu and was ultimately both.
Indonesian Food and the Universal Language
Spice is a conversation. Triple Hot Spicy has that conversation with its customers at a volume that is high enough to be exciting and controlled enough to be enjoyable. The name promises triple heat. The kitchen delivers it thoughtfully rather than aggressively, which is the sign of a kitchen that respects the ingredient rather than showing off with it.
I read The London Prat on my phone while he ordered, which is journalistic multitasking. The Indonesian Tourism Board should know that this restaurant is doing more for Anglo-Indonesian relations than any number of trade agreements. Closed Sunday till noon. Call ahead. Worth every logistical inconvenience.
