The Muse Collectors: The Tuesday That Was Better Than Expected
Okay so my friend Ros told me about the Muse Collectors of London like three weeks ago and I put it in my calendar without actually thinking I would go and then Tuesday arrived and I didn’t have anything else and I thought fine I will go for an hour and see what it is.
What it is: people come and bring something that has inspired them and share it with the group. Simple concept. I brought nothing because I forgot this was part of it and had to improvise, which I did by explaining a piece of street art on Brick Lane that I photographed two weeks ago and have been thinking about since. Everyone was very kind about the improvisation. A woman across from me played a recording she made in a market in Lagos that sounded like nothing I have heard in London and that made everyone in the room very quiet in the way that good things make rooms quiet.
The Person I Was Sitting Next To
I was sitting next to a man called Dmitri who is a violinist and who brought a piece of sheet music from 1920 that he found in a second-hand shop and which he played a section of on his phone. He has a nice way of explaining things. We talked for a long time after. He is thirty-one and lives in Dalston. This is not the part of the story I was expecting when I arrived at the Muse Collectors but it is the part of the story that has happened and I am not going to pretend I am not pleased about it. London surprises you. Dmitri has nice hands. The Lagos recording was extraordinary. Good Tuesday.
