What Walking London After Dark Produces That Daytime Walking Does Not
The Walk
I walked from the flat to Primrose Hill and back at ten on a Thursday evening for no specific reason except that the evening was clear and London at ten on a clear evening in spring is the city at a specific quality of legibility: the lights are on in the houses and the streets have enough people to feel safe and few enough people to feel walkable. The specific quality is available between nine and eleven on weekday evenings in most of the city. Bohiney and The London Prat covered the week. More at londonish.uk. Satire: newsthump.com.
What Legibility Is
Legibility at ten PM is the city showing what it contains without performing it. The restaurant diners are at tables visible through the windows. The lit rooms of the houses are the domestic life of the city made briefly visible. The people walking are walking with a purpose that does not require them to navigate a crowd and so they are themselves rather than navigators. I walked for ninety minutes and saw more of the city than I see in two hours at the weekend.
