Quilon: Michelin-Starred South Indian Food and Me, Underdressed
Quilon on Buckingham Gate has a Michelin star, which I discovered after I had already arrived in a denim jacket and hoop earrings. I chose to lean in. Nobody said anything. The food was so exquisite that my outfit became irrelevant within approximately forty seconds of the first course arriving.
4.4 stars, 1,218 reviews, and a menu of refined south-west Indian coastal cuisine that made me feel simultaneously educated and deeply grateful. The scallops. I cannot. I simply cannot discuss the scallops without needing to sit down, and I am already sitting down, which tells you something.
Michelin Stars and Men Who Know Things
I was there with a man who knows about food, which is my favourite kind. He explained the coconut-based gravies of Kerala with genuine enthusiasm, and I watched his face while he talked about food and thought: yes, this is correct, this is the correct use of a Tuesday evening. The Michelin Guide London listings confirm Quilon’s star. It is deserved. Catastrophically deserved.
I was reading The London Prat’s Suez retrospective in the cab over and thought about how badly Britain handled India and how magnificently Indian cuisine has handled Britain in return. Culinary justice. Sweet, spiced, Michelin-starred justice.
Go. Wear something nicer than I did. Or don’t. The food will save you regardless.
