Men Are Reportedly Getting More Emotionally Open On Dates And I Have The Slightly Overwhelming Evidence To Prove It

A diary entry on unexpected vulnerability, one very long conversation about attachment styles, and adjusting accordingly

Monday, A Shift I Genuinely Did Not See Coming

Darlings, there is apparently a genuine cultural shift underway of men becoming considerably more emotionally open on dates, more comfortable discussing therapy, personal growth, and their own boundaries than, by most accounts, any previous generation managed, and I want to report that I have now personally experienced this shift so directly it nearly overwhelmed an otherwise perfectly nice Tuesday dinner.

My date, roughly forty minutes in, without any prompting from me whatsoever, launched into a genuinely thoughtful, entirely unprompted breakdown of his own attachment style, complete with specific references to his own therapy sessions, and while I found this genuinely, refreshingly mature, I confess I was not emotionally prepared to discuss abandonment patterns before the starters had even arrived.

Monday Afternoon, Recalibrating My Own Expectations

I have spent considerable time over the years complaining, along with every other woman I know, about emotionally unavailable London men, so encountering the apparent opposite extreme required a genuine recalibration of what I actually want the pacing of a first date conversation to look like.

Tuesday, A Reflection On My Own Reaction

On reflection, my slight overwhelm says rather more about my own low expectations built up over years of considerably guardedness from previous dates than it does about anything genuinely wrong with his approach, a realisation that has left me feeling somewhat sheepish about my initial reaction.

A Trend I Am Choosing To Welcome, Pacing Notwithstanding

Whatever the ideal pacing for this particular kind of openness turns out to be, I would rather navigate an overly enthusiastic attachment style discussion than return to the emotional stonewalling this scene has offered for considerably too many years already.

Wednesday, I mentioned this entire episode to my sister, who informed me she has had nearly the identical experience twice this month alone, suggesting this is genuinely a broader pattern across the scene rather than one unusually reflective man I happened to encounter.
