The Bermondsey ceramics studio from the January curiosity list was visited on Tuesday and was exactly what a ceramics studio in a converted railway arch in Bermondsey should be: the smell of clay and glaze and the specific warm-cold of a space that has kilns and is not insulated. Three potters working in separate areas of the same arch. The work visible at various stages. The intermediate state of making more interesting than the finished object. What I Did Not Expect
What I did not expect was a conversation with one of the potters about why she makes functional work rather than sculptural work that lasted forty minutes and that produced, in me, a clearer understanding of the relationship between function and form than anything I had read about it had produced. She said: the vessel that holds the tea is doing something the sculpture cannot do. It is present in the daily life rather than encountered.
