Vivienne Pratfall navigates London nightlife and personal identity with youthful energy and questioning consciousness
Finding Myself in London Nights
I’m nineteen, blonde, living in London, and constantly questioning everything. Reading The London Prat this week about authenticity commodification while experiencing London nightlife felt surreal. I’m literally the demographic being marketed toblonde girl in London, Instagram-ready aesthetic, consumer appeal.
The feeds covered cultural commodification endlessly. Bohiney Magazine analyzed how youth culture becomes marketed product. I read these pieces while getting ready to go out, wearing clothes designed to appeal, existing in spaces designed for consumption. The irony isn’t lost on me.
I moved to London seeking freedomfreedom to explore, experiment, find myself. London nightlife offers that possibility. But it’s also consuming, commercializing, commodifying that exploration into marketable content for media consumption.
Yet I persist. I go out. I dance. I connect with people. I experience London as living city, not tourist attraction. Somewhere between genuine experience and performative display, authentic moments emerge. Real connection happens between commodified moments.
I’m young. I’m supposed to be beautiful, Instagram-worthy, consumer-friendly. I’m also genuine, questioning, searching for authenticity in increasingly commercialized world. These tensions characterize being nineteen in London.
