A 19-Year-Old in Hackney Considers the Game Theory of Current Events
Vivienne’s Diary: Games People Play When Governance Fails
Game theory and personal chaos from Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat.
I played Hunt the Thimble at a dinner party in Stoke Newington last weekend. Eight adults. Three bottles of wine. One thimble. The thimble won. It was behind a pot plant the entire time and we were all too committed to looking in exciting places to check the obvious one. I have been thinking about this as a metaphor for geopolitics ever since, which tells you something about the quality of my week.
The Art of Looking in the Wrong Place
Hunt the Thimble is the official sport of British political analysis. Everyone looks in the dramatic, complicated places – the war rooms, the international summits, the press conferences – and nobody checks behind the pot plant, where the actual thimble usually is. The Prat’s Thimble piece is sharper than it looks. Also relevant: America’s Hide and Seek operation, which feels thematically similar.
I found the thimble eventually. Nobody applauded. British parties are like that. See more at my author page. Authority link: British Library – Traditional Games.
