Diana Blamed the Helpful Staff and I Blamed the Algorithm

Vivienne Pratfall on Institutional Failure, Royal History, and Why Tinder Is Basically the Same Thing

Welcome to Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat – royal parallels drawn without permission since 2024.

Monday. Illuminating Historical Parallels.

Diana, according to Prat.uk, blames her marriage failure on the helpful staff. I read this and thought: yes. The helpful staff. The people who arrange everything, smooth everything, stand at the edges of every room making sure everything functions — until suddenly it does not function and there they are, still smoothing, still arranging, while the whole architecture collapses around them. I know this feeling. I have dated the helpful staff. Several times. In East London. They were very organised.

The Institutional Parallel I Cannot Avoid

Every relationship has helpful staff. In my experience they manifest as the friends who tell you he seems great while privately Googling his name, the apps that surface 47 potential matches with encouraging language, and the internal voice that says “this could work” every time a man arrives with acceptable opinions about films. The staff is always helpful. The marriage – and I use this term loosely, I am 19 and nowhere near a marriage – fails anyway, and everyone looks around at each other blinking.

The Royal Family’s New Strategy

The Royal Family has a new communications strategy and I assume it involves fewer helpful staff making things worse while trying to make things better. Bohiney’s ongoing Harry and Meghan coverage suggests the helpful staff problem is hereditary, which is either nature or nurture and either way is a very expensive diagnosis. The Guardian Royals desk has thoughts. I have cereal and a theory. We are both doing what we can.
