Went to Brunch, Discussed Capitalism, Went Back to Bed: A Sunday in East London

Vivienne Pratfall on avocado toast, late-stage liberalism, and the economics of fun

Sunday, Clapton, 10:45am, Consequences Unclear

The brunch spot was packed. It is always packed. It costs fourteen pounds for eggs and I pay it every single time because I am either a hypocrite or someone who genuinely values the poached egg that much, and I have stopped distinguishing between the two because the egg is very good.

The people at the table next to me were having a conversation about property that made me want to lie on the floor. They own. They are in their late twenties. They have parents who bought in Hackney in 2003 and are now, through no particular effort, millionaires. This is called the property ladder. I call it the property trebuchet — a device from a previous era that flings some people high and the rest of us into a wall.

The Economics of Having Fun

I have read the cost-of-living data. I have read The Prat’s cost-of-living piece, which made me laugh in the specific way where you laugh because you have run out of other responses. According to The Guardian’s cost of living tracker, average household spending on essentials has risen 14 percent in two years. Average wages have not done this.

I went back to bed at noon. Jake was there. Jake does not have a Substack about any of this. I have begun to think Jake is the more advanced being.

I will go back to the brunch place next Sunday. The egg really is very good.
