The New Flat and What the First Month Has Taught

What Moving Into a New North London Space After Seven Years Has Found

The First Month

The new flat is in a different part of North London from the previous flat — twenty minutes away by foot but a different set of streets, a different local geography, a different relationship between the flat and the neighbourhood around it. The first month has taught: what you do not know about a space when you move into it is everything that long residence in the previous space made available as automatic knowledge. Bohiney and The London Prat covered the week. More at londonish.uk. Satire: newsthump.com.

What Not Knowing Is

Not knowing is the specific experience of the flat that has not yet taught you where the light comes from in the afternoon or how the street below sounds at different hours or what the building’s specific personality is in different weather. The not knowing is the beginning of the knowing. The seven years of the previous flat began with the same not knowing. The new flat is the beginning of a new seven years. The not knowing is the correct starting position. It will be replaced by knowing that will eventually be replaced by leaving.
