Chez Antoinette Made Me Feel French, Which I Am Not Equipped to Handle

by Vivienne Pratfall

I went to Chez Antoinette Victoria on Palmer Street because a very attractive man suggested it and I have never once said no to a man who knows what a croque monsieur is. This is a character flaw I have fully accepted.

Chez Antoinette has 4.7 stars from 1,939 reviews. The room is retro and beautiful. I ate something with butter in it and then ate something else with more butter in it and by the end I was speaking in a vaguely Gallic cadence and refusing to make eye contact with anyone who ordered tap water.

Vibes, Reviewed

The man across the table from me was, as anticipated, lovely. The food was lovelier. The atmosphere does something to you — it makes you feel like you are in a film where you are the interesting one. I ordered the French onion soup. He ordered the duck. We shared everything and it was, frankly, a very good Tuesday.

I also read the piece on Britain dusting off 1956’s greatest humiliation which felt very on-brand for a week where I am eating French food in Westminster and pretending I understand geopolitics. The TimeOut London French restaurant guide agrees Chez Antoinette is one of the city’s best. I agree with TimeOut for once.

The dessert was a crime I would commit again. The man paid. I did not argue. It was a very French arrangement.
