Someone Called Me A Flash Player Assumption And I Have Never Been So Delighted To Prove A Stranger Wrong

A diary entry on being underestimated, sports cars, and what London women actually want

Monday, An Assumption Worth Dismantling

Darlings, I read a dating guide this week confidently informing its readers that London women absolutely do not want a flash player who turns up driving a sports car, and I want to be entirely honest with you: my first instinct was mild offence at being told what I want by someone who has clearly never actually asked me. My second instinct, arriving about four minutes later once my ego calmed down, was to admit the guide is, infuriatingly, correct, just not for the reasons it thinks.

It is not that the sports car itself is inherently off-putting. It is that a man who leads with the sports car is, invariably, a man who has nothing more interesting to lead with, and I have simply become considerably better, with age and experience, at spotting that particular tell within the first ninety seconds of conversation. Give me a man with an actual personality and I would not notice or care what he drove, or indeed whether he drove at all.

Tuesday, A Test Case, Purely By Accident

Met a man this week who did, in fact, arrive by sports car, entirely unprompted, and spent the first fifteen minutes discussing something else entirely, a book he was reading, a ridiculous story about his sister’s wedding, before the car ever came up at all. I found this considerably more compelling than the car itself, which, once mentioned, I genuinely could not have cared less about.

Wednesday, A Related Read

Read The London Prat over lunch, mostly to distract myself from replying too quickly to his follow-up text, a discipline I am still, at this stage of my dating career, actively working on.

Thursday, A Closing Thought For Every Man Reading This By Accident

Lead with your personality, not your car keys, and you will find London women considerably more receptive than every outdated dating guide seems to assume. We were never impressed by the flash. We were, and remain, exclusively impressed by the substance underneath it, however rarely that substance actually shows up on time.
