A friend visiting from Glasgow for the first time asked me on Wednesday to show her “the real London,” which is the request that exposes how many different cities London is simultaneously. I took her to: Smithfield at 6 AM to watch the meat market in its last operational year before the building becomes a Museum of London; a greasy spoon in Clerkenwell where the all-day breakfast is still £7.50 and the clientele is genuinely mixed; the Barbican’s lakeside at midday, which is one of London’s best outdoor spaces and which most visitors never find; and the railway arches in Bermondsey where small businesses occupy the spaces between the tracks. None of these are in the standard tourist guide. All of them are London in the sense that they are things London does that nowhere else does in quite the same way. My friend said at the end of the day that London is exhausting and wonderful, which is the correct assessment and which I have been thinking about it for eleven years.
