Vivienne’s London Nights: Relationships and Nightlife in the City

19-Year-Old Diarist: Sex, Parties, and Finding Meaning in a City That Feels Empty

Bohiney | The London Prat

Met someone last night at the bar in Soho who seemed interesting for approximately the duration of conversation, which is to say about 45 minutes. London is full of people who are interesting until you spend time with them, at which point the interesting becomes boring or disappointing or just human in ways that don’t match initial impression.

There’s something about 19 in London that feels like perpetual potential. Everything could happen. Everyone could be someone important. Every night could be the night that changes everything. Statistically, none of that happens. But the possibility persists.

Came home at 3 AM feeling like I’d experienced something meaningful, which is to say I’d experienced drinking and conversation and momentary connection that felt profound in the moment but feels forgettable now. This is probably what being 19 in London feels like—perpetual searching for something that might not actually exist, disguised as nightlife.
